Bat with smoke trail

Hi guys,
I want to make a simple mob that is a bat that as it flies, leaves a little trail of thicker black smoke behind it.
Also maybe a boss that summons a bunch of these to fly around him in a cool AoE?

But using the - effect particles
is just too much like a sphere...I want this to be like a trail
